🎥 Be Pretty And Shut Up (Sois belle et tais-toi!). Director: Daphne Seyrig, FR, 1976, 115 min, fr + en subtitles
(📢 𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑖𝑠ℎ 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑙𝑦, 𝑒𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛𝑓𝑜 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑤)

Delphine Seyrig is best known as an actress from Truffaut, Duras, Resnais or for the role of Jeanne Dielman in the canonical film Chantal Akerman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. In addition to being an actress, however, Seyrig was an active feminist figure. In Be Pretty And Shut Up, along with filmmaker and activist Carole Roussopoulos, she interviews twenty-four French and American actresses—including Juliet Berto, Ellen Burstyn, Jane Fonda, Shirley MacLaine, Anne Wiazemsky, and Marie Schneider—about their experiences as women in the film industry, their roles, and their relationships with directors, producers, and crew members. In one of her three directorial works, Seyrig borrowed the title from Marc Allégret's 1958 film of the same name, referring to the sense of what actresses feel is expected of them by the film industry. The overall assessment of the experience of actresses in 1976 was rather negative and revealed a profession that offered only stereotypical and alienating roles. Roussopoulos, Seyrig and Ioana Wieder jointly founded the Center Audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir in 1982.

The film will be screened together with Valentine Zhang's animated short called I am not, in which Alice sneaks out of the house to take part in a guerilla posting of leaflets.
