About event
A lecture by Elisabeth Kühne
In his monumental opera Khovanchschina (“The Khovansky Affair”), Modest Mussorgsky unfolds an overwhelming historical panorama: Before Peter the Great seized power, Moscow became the scene of chaotic political conditions between 1682 and 1687. In their brutal battles for the throne, a wide variety of parties face each other - fanatical sectarians, so-called "Old Believers", the Strelitzis (the tsar's bodyguard), anarchist lone fighters and staunch supporters of Peter. But the real protagonist of the opera is the people. However, Mussorgsky's drama was less about a detailed recreation of political events and more about depicting "the past in the present" in a collage of historical documents - a kind of meditation on history using the means of opera. In his production, director Claus Guth dissects this chapter of Russian history like a criminal case and examines how systems of power and oppression, intrigue and violence repeat themselves over and over again. Due to the composer's early death, the opera remained unfinished. The score completed by Dmitri Shostakovich will be performed at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, which will be complemented by the effective finale by Igor Stravinsky - impressively bringing to life a world full of religious fanaticism and political intrigue.
