Walter Lingán is a Peruvian writer, doctor and essayist who has lived in Cologne (Germany) since the early 1980s.
He was born in San Miguel de Pallaques (Cajamarca, Peru) and spent his childhood partly in his home region and partly in the Amazonian rainforest on the Utcubamba river, where he grew up with members of the indigenous Aguaruna people.
Before he was twelve years old, he moved to Lima and studied at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and worked there on literary and journalistic projects. Since moving to Germany, he has studied medicine and now works in a hospital in Cologne.
In addition to his medical work, Walter Lingán is active as an author, narrator and member of the group “Autores Latinoamericanos de Alemania (ALA)”. He writes in Spanish and his works deal with themes such as identity, migration, memory and political violence.
He has received several awards, including:
- 1988 - First prize in the International Storytelling Competition “José María Arguedas” (Paris) for La danza de la viuda negra
- 1996 – First prize in the Juegos Florales of the literary Tertulia El Butacón (Hamburg)
- 2001 – Third place in the International competition “El cuento de las 2000 palabras“ of the magazine Caretas (Lima)
His best-known works include stories such as Mama Angélica, El sabor de sus labios and Verano en una taza de café.
His texts combine personal ones Experiences, historical memory and social reflection – often with a deeply humanistic view of Peru and exile.
