More than 10,000 Years of History | Archaeological intervention on the grounds of the former Popular Fair

In the Entrecampos area, the orography and the existence of several watercourses allowed, over time, the installation of several human communities. Excavations in the grounds of the former Lisbon Popular Fair prove this.
From an early age, this area, now part of the city of Lisbon, was chosen for human settlements. The oldest remains correspond to different concentrations of decontextualized lithic materials inserted in the Lower/Middle Paleolithic and Old Mesolithic occupation contexts, remnants of the experiences of hunter-gatherer communities that roamed these parts. In addition to these, there are material testimonies from recent prehistory (Neolithic/Chalcolithic) and later from the Roman period, which allow us to characterize different phases of the population settlement process, with consequent domination and humanization of the surrounding space. Testimonies of occupations during the modern and contemporary era were also identified, the latter being more expressive, marked by old farms and rural settlements.
