About event

Symbols such as the scarf or miniskirt, or names such as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk or Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are part of a deeper historical and social struggle to define the role of women in the Turkish public space. The lecture will show how the legacy of Kemalist reforms, the period of state-promoted secularism and the later Islamization of politics are reflected in the current position of women in Turkey. It will focus on the different forms of female religiosity - from secular to religious - and why Islam is not an obstacle for many Turkish women, but a framework of identity, resistance or even emancipation. Special attention will be paid to feminist movements in Turkey: their plurality, internal disputes and differences between secular and Islamic feminism. The lecture will offer a historical perspective as well as contemporary examples of women's activism and show why Turkish women cannot be understood as a passive object of politics, but as active actors who take part in shaping society in the long term.

Lucie Tungul studied international relations at Miami University in Ohio and political science and European studies at Palacky University in Olomouc. She worked at Fatih University in Istanbul for ten years. Currently, she works as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Law of the Palacký University in Olomouc, and is the head of research at the TOPAZ institute. She is a member of the board of the Czech Society for Political Science and executive editor of the magazine Politologická revue.
