About event

THE BEST OF CONTEMPORARY SPANISH LANGUAGE DRAMAS WILL BE PRESENTED AGAIN IN A COMPETITIVE EVENING OF STAGED READINGS. THE QUARTER OF PLAYS REPRESENTS FOUR DIFFERENT POETICS BY AUTHORS OF THE MIDDLE GENERATION AND A QUARTER OF DIFFERENT TOPICS. WHY AND HOW TO TALK ABOUT WARS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY TODAY? DOES THE SEXUALITY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES BELONG ON THE STAGE? HOW TO TELL ABOUT THE OEDIPUS THEME? WHAT ABOUT THE ETERNAL THEME OF LOVE? A TRINITY OF AUTHORS WILL COME TO PRAGUE TO DEFEND THEIR PLAYS.

Every year we build a team of translators, directors and actors to prepare stage readings, we invite directors, dramaturgs, critics to the expert jury. In the first two years, we brought plays by eight Spanish authors to the Czech theater world, five of which were or will be performed on Czech stages and as radio plays. This year we will present the following great Spanish authors and their Czech translators.

Playwright and actor Paco Gámez will bring to Prague his last play, which he created as part of the European project Land of Destruction for the Madrid theater company LaJoven. Gaps and Fog, premiered in January, scenically reflects some forgotten aspects of the Spanish Civil War on the one hand, and the need or not for its commemoration among young people who are more interested in the future. For the first time, as part of Prague's La Batalla, we will touch on a key topic of modern Spanish history thanks to a play whose center of gravity is the updating and universalistic conception of the topic. A play that tells about a past war with the clear intention of talking about the wars of today.

Meganormal is a play written in 2022 by Esther F. Carroguedas for the National Drama Center and became a theater sensation in Madrid. The Galician author's burst of unrestrained humor is thrown at situations in which social prejudices clash with simple and raw honesty. What is at stake here? Nothing out of the ordinary. People with disabilities claiming their right to sex. A manifesto of humanism and love as well as an honest attack on our own stereotypes, during which we never stop laughing.

Playwright, director and actor, who became famous for his autofictional concept of theater Sergio Blanco, will also visit the Czech Republic for the first time. Perhaps the most widely performed of his plays in the world is Thébyland, a scenic exploration of the theme of patricide. On stage, the alter-ego of the author is presented in dialogue with a young man convicted of beating his own father, and at the same time we watch the preparations for a performance on the given topic. The tension of the game comes from the fascinating process of constantly moving from reality to fiction and back again. At the center of the play is the story of a boy and his desperate act, but the main theme gradually becomes the actual representation of the story in the theater. works, we selected her most translated play Some kind of third place. A collection of love encounters and moments of couples that will never become them. The play Cupid, who unerringly sends his arrows in opposite directions, is a contemporary, neurotic and absurd variation on Shakespeare's enchanted forest.

Half-hour excerpts from the quartet of plays will be translated by four translators and presented to the audience in the form of staged readings prepared by four theater directors. Together, they will compete in the stage ring for the favor of the audience and the expert jury.

The evening will be accompanied by a musical and gastronomic display of Spanish culture.

Before the evening of scenic readings, there will be a debate with Spanish playwrights and special guest, radio editor and expert on Spanish theater Daniel Galindo, author of the popular program LaSala, which is broadcast by the Spanish National Radio.

La Batalla – Playwrights Duel is a joint project of the Cervantes Institute in Prague and the Municipal Theaters of Prague. Curator of the evening Petr Gojda, artistic supervision of Simon Petrů.
