About event

A course focused on mastering basic neurological tasks in first-line practice, which will teach you how to diagnose and solve neurological diseases.

Neurology is one of the veterinary disciplines that is considered very demanding and therefore most veterinarians avoid it - the reason is often ignorance of a structured approach to the neurological patient. MVDr. Aleš Tomek, Dipl. ECVN will teach you an easy-to-understand neurological examination technique that will help you specify any neurological changes and start targeted therapy. With such a tool, you will no longer worry about neurological cases, but you will begin to examine patients with confidence and with a successful result.

As part of the course, participants and the lecturer will be part of a WhatsApp group in which they can consult their cases.

Lecturer: MVDr. Aleš Tomek, Dipl. ECVN

Module 1 (January 22-23, 2027)
Neurological examination, localization, including necessary basic neuroanatomy; gait analysis (limping, paralysis, incoordination). Practical exercise with dogs.

Understanding functional neuroanatomy is a must, it is the basis for a neurological examination that leads to the correct localization of the lesion in the nervous system. We will explain that a complicated neurological examination is simple. It is complicated to cope with the diversity and response of a living organism that reacts differently than the neurological literature assumes. Proper communication with the client and working with the anamnesis are also important. Then solving the neurological patient is actually a piece of cake. Everything will be interactively discussed on the rich video material of the patients.

Module 2 (5-6/3/2027)
Neurological symptoms and their differential diagnoses (for example, vision disorders, disorders of consciousness/disorientation, tilted head, monoparesis, paraparesis, tetraparesis).

In medicine, a symptom or set of symptoms does not equate directly to a specific disease. We always consider a whole group of differential diagnoses from a different spectrum of pathological processes. A set of obvious observed symptoms, such as tetraparesis, does not necessarily mean localization of the problem in one part of the nervous system. In order to arrive at a more precise localization, we will use other neurological examination tests, reflexes and reactions, or palpation. Knowledge of functional neuroanatomy helps us. A neurological examination will also help us determine the extent of the lesion (from mild to severe degree of impairment, lateralization of the problem, etc.). If we obtain and process the data obtained from the anamnesis well, we are able to be effective in establishing a list of differential diagnoses, estimate the probability of one or the other pathological process (vascular accident vs inflammation vs tumor, etc.) and subsequently plan a sequence of further examinations.

In this module we will work with patients showing different symptoms, we will analyze movement, posture, define lameness, paralysis, incoordination. Through this analysis, we will try to find algorithms for a sophisticated solution that will lead to a successful definitive diagnosis. The client is impatient and of course expects a result in the form of a simple treatment and a favorable prognosis. However, we cannot neglect the initial steps. Otherwise, we will make the examination more expensive, prolong the therapy or miss a favorable prognosis.

Module 3 (April 16-17, 2027)
Brain diseases (brain trauma, inflammation, tumors, vascular causes, anomalies, degenerative diseases) and paroxysmal states – epilepsy and other seizure states.

This part of the neuroeducational program summarizes the findings from functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology to date, we will review differentiation of individual intracranial symptoms required for neurolocalization of the lesion. We will discuss individual pathological processes (trauma, inflammation, tumors, epilepsy, etc.) within the framework of specific brain diseases. In addition to the characteristics, we will of course focus on diagnostic possibilities (diagnostic methods) and subsequent therapy (causal, palliative or diagnostic) in veterinary practice.

Module 4 (May 28-29, 2027)
Spinal cord diseases (traumas including MOP herniation, AA instability, Wobbler syndrome, L/S stenosis, inflammation, tumors, degenerative diseases, anomalies); PNS diseases (polyneuropathy, myasthenia gravis, diseases/traumas of individual nerves).

The course is evaluated with points as part of the continuous education KVL CR and KVL SK (please enter your KVL number in the notes in the basket).

It is possible to use points from the Norbrook loyalty program, Purina veterinary program and V.I.P. points NOVIKO.

Program and dates subject to change.
