About event
🇨🇿
The co-production film Rana (2017), which shone at the Sundance festival and the Berlinale, takes place in the environment of the Republic of South Africa. The life of the South African Xhosa tribe is brought closer to the story of the quiet and sensitive worker Xolani. Every year, young members of the tribe must travel to the Eastern Cape province where they undergo a traditional initiation ritual to become men. In the film, the ancient culture collides with the modern urban lifestyle and the need to find a sexual identity. The feature-length debut of director John Trengove shatters traditional stereotypes of the masculinity of black men and sensitively approaches the crisis faced by millions of queer people not only on the African continent.
The film will be presented by David Čeněk, film historian, translator and dean of FAMU.
Genre: drama
Length: 88 minutes
Director: John Trengove
Text: Xhoština (subtitles: English)
