Etudes rhythmiques
TUESDAY / TUESDAY / 21/10/2025 / Moyzes Hall / 19:00

"The artist tries to understand, to understand the basis of all things, which actually all people do; he only has the ability to express them in his work."
Bohuslav MARTINŮ

"I cannot express the pleasure I have when I start composing chamber music..." writes Bohuslav Martinů (1890 – 1959) in one of his letters from 1946, adding that he feels "at home, intimate, happy" in chamber music. After the performance of the complete set of piano sonatas by Sergei Prokofiev, the outstanding Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen will return to Convergence in October, whose interpretation of Bohuslav Martinů's music is described by critics as "passionate and uncompromising". In addition to Fantasy and toccata, he will also perform in Piano Quintet No. 2 from 1944, a piece in which, according to connoisseurs of the composer's work, echoes of war can be heard. They forced the composer to leave Europe for the USA. The last of the trio of cello sonatas was created there, which will be performed by Jozef Lupták at the final concert of Convergences with Olli Mustonen. The dramaturgy of the evening will be complemented by "Martinů Pasticcio", which was compiled from the composer's works for violin and piano by the Slovak violinist Igor Karško working in Switzerland.

After presenting the complete cycle of Sergei Prokofiev's piano sonatas, the outstanding Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen returns to Konvergencie this October. Critics have described his interpretations of Martinů as "passionate and uncompromising." Alongside the Fantaisie and Toccata, Mustonen will also perform the Piano Quintet No. 2 (1944), a work that carries, according to connoisseurs of the composer, the echoes of war—echoes that drove Martinů to leave Europe for the United States. There, he composed the final of his three cello sonatas, which will resonate at the festival's closing concert with cellist Jozef Lupták joining Mustonen on stage.

The evening's program will be complemented by Martinů Pasticcio, a compilation of the composer's works for violin and piano, assembled by the Slovak violinist Igor Karško, who is based in Switzerland.
