About event
We cordially invite you to a guided tour of the Otis Laubert exhibition: Art could heal you, which will take place on 5/5 (Tuesday) at 5:00 p.m. in Bethlen House at Dolná 141/8 in Banská Bystrica.
The world of Otis Laubert's work touches each of us. He is intimately familiar to us, but still manages to surprise. It leads us to unexpected views of the world and the state of affairs with which we come into contact on a daily basis and with those that are beyond us. In his work, he uses ordinary objects (ready-mades), which he collects, categorizes and gives them a new life. By intertwining the banal and the timeless, using the principles of paradox, wit and image or word play, he composes visual metaphors and comments on the current world. It navigates us both to the encrypted secret and to our own associations.
In Otis Laubert, we could find a contribution to perhaps any topic and area of life. Not all of them are known, many remain hidden in his Bratislava depository and studio in one. The multi-layered work of this internationally renowned author cannot be contained in one exhibition. However, he offers a probe into selected areas, such as interpretations of works by fellow artists, Japan, postal art, interpreted textiles, music or maps, which belong to his essential series.
We can perceive the exhibition as an adventurous expedition that reveals something to us and leaves something shrouded in mystery. It does not follow the chronology of creation of the works, but selected topics that point to the principles of the author's work. It presents previously unexhibited drawings from the 1960s, collages, assemblages and objects from six decades. Sometimes we can get a feeling of déjà vu with them, sometimes we will feel like discoverers of new worlds. With his work close to visual poetry, Otis Laubert proves and bequeaths to us what is also confirmed today on a scientific level - that art also has therapeutic potential and might even heal us.
The tour is organized by: Otis Laubert (author), Daniela Čarná (curator)
