About event

We invite you to the second of the series of Book Cafes, again in an informal and friendly spirit. This time, Richard Šípek from the Department of Manuscripts and Old Prints from the Library of the National Museum will sit down with us, and he will guide you through the world of books and reading in the early modern age.

How did the reading habits of those times differ from today? And in what ways are we similar to our ancestors? What did noble and bourgeois libraries look like, what functions did books fulfill and what did people write down or store in them? What can the books themselves tell us about the lives of their owners? And did people respect books... or were they sometimes even afraid of them?

Richard Šípek will also briefly present the possibilities and methods of researching the history of libraries and readership — clearly, vividly and without academic barriers.

Come sit, listen and discover what books can tell. ☕📚 We are looking forward to seeing you!

And don't forget — the next Book Cafe awaits us on 18 June. We look forward to it!
