About event
Brother Bonaventura will guide us through the monastery and the church of Our Lady of the Snows. During the tour, we will also visit the normally inaccessible areas of the monastery. We will visit the refectory, walk through the Garden of Eden (other parts of the garden are normally accessible, so they are not part of the tour) and take a look behind the scenes of the majestic church altar, which, at 29 m high, is the highest in Prague. We will talk about the church and look at the organ. We will also be able to admire the baroque monastery library, sometimes called "little Strahov". The library was founded in 1678 and was modified to its present form in 1760. A number of valuable prints and manuscripts are kept here.
The Church of Our Lady of the Snows with the adjacent Carmelite monastery was founded by Charles IV. the day after his coronation as Czech king. It was supposed to form a worthy counterweight to the Cathedral of St. It welcomes you on the opposite bank of the Vltava River. About a third of the original plans were realized, even so the church has the highest vault of all Prague churches (34 meters). The dramatic events of the first Prague defenestration in 1419 began right here after the sermon of local priest Jan Želivský. Except for the period of the Hussite Wars, the Carmelites stayed here until the beginning of the 16th century, then they left the Czech Kingdom. Rudolph II dedicated the monastery and church to the Franciscans, who began to restore the dilapidated building. But the Franciscans did not have an easy life at first in Prague, which was more Protestant than Catholic at the time. In 1611, 14 Franciscans were killed by the Prague Lóza (Fourteen Prague Martyrs) during the invasion of the Paso troops. During the 17th century, extensive modifications were made to the church (new vault, cure). The already mentioned baroque altar was also built.
Length of tour approx. 1.5 hours. Price: 350 CZK for adults, 200 CZK for pensioners, children and students under 17 inclusive.
Maximum capacity 20 people.
