About event
𐙚。⋆𖦹⋆🎞️ 🌊 Come to the screening of the film 88:88 (2015)
Director: Isiah Medina
"An experimental film diary about young people from Winnipeg who are struggling to make ends meet."

88:88 is a film that rewrote the rules. After ten years, the now cult experimental debut still stands out above today's festival work as something truly new and perhaps of the future. The colorful spiral of images and sounds does not begin in the safety of the script, yet it does not lack consistency of execution and a supporting theme. Another screening of the film club on the big screen of the small ARCHY+ hall.

Finally you have money and electricity. Appliances pop up, 88:88 flashes on the screen, —:—. The time of infinity and the editing nothing, the not-thing that organizes it. It doesn't make us think in terms of film. The nothingness of the cut, the empty space between, is invariant like a mathematical operation. Minimal preparations, mainly arriving at the set, finding the composition and starting. Philosophy is easy, poverty is hard.

Films start with something, a subject, a preconceived objectivity, but some people have nothing and start right here, with a technique that connects those empty nothings, editing. When French critics railed against films of quality, they meant films starting with a script, films dictated by language, after all, like today's AI-prompting. That is why Medina is looking for other infinities, not films of non-quality, but Quantity Cinema, as he names his production company. In a narrow circle of friends, they are still thinking about form, production conditions, inventing systems, and the finished images scattered over time stand as a challenge to them: "don't be cowards." Record what is happening, invent a new non-thing around it that will hold the observed and give it room to grow. Take it seriously.
"Should we try to capture reality without any intervention, or should we instead find a way to document the very form of intervention? Some believe that in cinematography we can see a kind of pre-linguistic concept of simple vision, but if a name names a space that separates a thing from itself, then it also names a thing. We document a cut that names the fact that there is nothing to see."
