About event

The band of three short films presents Yiddish culture in different film genres – from surreal essay to poetic documentary. Although the films differ in style, they are united by the search for Jewish roots. The band offers a view of Yiddish not as a closed chapter of history, but as a living vehicle for dialogue between generations and cultures of the diaspora.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Shoshana Simons (50 Voices Across the Shtetl Multiverse).

Fragments of Language Eli, an idealistic young supporter of the diaspora, accidentally brings to life her literary idol - the famous Yiddish poet Perec Marquis. Perec takes Eli on a surreal journey through a blossoming forest, during which the girl gradually discovers that the path to the transformation of Jewish identity does not lie in mourning the dead, but in a deep dive into the living and authentic world of Yiddish.

Niggun A rabbi in the ghetto has only one wish: that the name of his family not be forgotten. One night, however, he is awakened by a knock on the door and a cruel ultimatum. The Nazis demand a list of ten people to be executed. If the rabbi does not build it, they take away the firstborn son from each family. The rabbi refuses to participate in such horror, but when he realizes that his own son is in danger, he must act - and he finds help from his ancestors.

50 Voices Across the Shtetl Multiverse The film draws on more than fifty hours of interviews with Jewish women from the Diaspora who they reflect the theme of freedom and Jewish identity. It sensitively connects inner worlds with the sights and sounds of the Lithuanian city of Žagarė, where the shtetl used to be. Although the female protagonists share common roots, today they differ from each other in terms of nationality, ideology and life experience. The film brings these diverse and often disparate voices together in an effort to build dialogue, empathy and understanding. The film is also a prologue to the author's broader project called The Shtetl Multiverse.
Language: Yiddish, with English and Czech subtitles
