About event
Back then, the film magazine Licht-Bild-Bühne wasn't stingy with superlatives: “The Cabinet
of Dr. Caligari" was nothing less than "the most modern, most up-to-date, most daring film that the
world has ever seen," wrote the magazine in 1920, shortly after its premiere, about the
first psychological thriller in film history.
/>One person who has dealt particularly intensively with this milestone in the history of
expressionist film is the composer and musician Karl Bartos
- well known to many as a long-time band member and co-composer of Kraftwerk, those < br/>Pioneers of electronic music who were at least as “modern, current, daring” in their field. For almost 20 years, the originally classically trained
musician has had a passion for this probably most influential German silent film of all time
and has been working on creating an equally experimental sound for the experimental film.
In 2024, this new film music by Karl Bartos will now be brought to the stage: The digitally
restored 4K version from the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung meets the level of the sounds
by Karl Bartos, which he recorded on the Stage with his partner Mathias Black live and synchronized
plays and controls.
The cabinet of Dr. Caligari, [OmeU] D 1919/20, R: Robert Wiene. With Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Lil Dagover, Friedrich Fehér, Hans Heinrich von Twardowski. Length: 71 min.
A film from the collection of the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation.
