About event
projection with live musical accompaniment by Lukáš Palán and Štěpán Pařízek
Before Aki Kaurismäki's film Juha (silent, albeit shot in 1999), there were three older film adaptations of the same novel by Juhani Aho. The second one from 1937 was of founding importance for the establishment of the Finnish film tradition (directed by Nyrki Tapiovaara). In Ponrep, you will see the successful first adaptation, which was filmed in Sweden in 1921 by the Finnish native Mauritz Stiller and which was played in our country under the name In the rapids. (Let's not confuse it with another Stiller film In Whirlwinds.)
A year later, in 1922, Stiller filmed an adaptation of Selma Lagerlöf's Tale of a Manor, the story of a scion of an impoverished family who, out of love for a circus performer, wants to get rich by trading in reindeer.
Musicians Lukáš Palán and Štěpán Pařízek have been united by their birthplace – Brno for more than ten years. Similar to the desire to refresh the sound of their hometown, their love for experimental electronic music and innovative approaches to guitar playing brought them together. While Lukáš creates music for theater and movement productions, especially as part of the artistic collective PocketArt, and works in the bands Role and Please the Trees, Štěpán is a prominent figure in the scene in the bands Ghost of You, Chief Bromden, Orient and SLAV. For the said Mauritz Stiller films, they will prepare a band of sound collages in an attempt to enrich their musical languages (which they practice every day anyway). Mathias Taube, Jenny Hasselquist
