The cooperation of the Jednota collective and MeetFactory brings another unique concert. British artist Richard Youngs will perform in Prague on June 9.

Richard Youngs is a peculiar person whose work is de facto united by one thing: he always does what he wants. Sometimes this means compositions for guitar and vocals, sometimes homemade electronics, other times abstractions for shakahuchi. The British musician, who has been making music for a good four decades, was shaped by the ethos of the post-punk and post-industrial scene open to experimentation with form and sound in a DIY context where authenticity was more important than virtuosity. The meeting with Cabaret Voltaire and Public Image Ltd. proved to be a turning point, but we cannot forget the amazing search of early Pink Floyd. Every trend has its exceptions and there is no linear development. Angelic folk meditations from the Sapphie album are emblematic, another good entry point is the curious trip into the world of synth pop on Beyond the Valley of Ultrahits. Youngs sings as if he's looking down on a majestic valley filled with sunlit mist, and he pulls off some a cappella tracks as well. To make it not easy - a significant part of his work is instrumental. Inclinations towards psychedelia and drone are common, more extreme deviations include progressive rock, country, chillout or jungle. A few years ago there was a phase where he played the guitar with his feet. The album Modern Sorrow (Black Truffle, 2023) deconstructs Drake's (!) production techniques including vocal correction. The next chapter is playing together with Jandek, Matthew Bower from Skullflower or Heather Leigh.

Sound collages, clumps of noise and transparent songs are connected by an intuitive method. Youngs doesn't gloss over his authenticity, but at the same time he never pushes the listener away. His experimentation is intrinsically joyful. As The Quietus magazine wrote, this is music characterized by a gentle euphoria.

Pip is one of those musicians who shows how intoxicating stasis can be. The duo of guitarist Fredrik Rasten and trumpeter Torstein Lavik Larsen is based on the rich Norwegian improvisation scene (they also play together in the groups Oker or Volumes, Rasten's collaboration with Alasdair Roberts deserves a special mention), but in their case, freedom has a somewhat different flavor than that of their companions. Rasten and Lavik Larsen conceive of their work as a field that instead of development offers endless possibilities: a space that is both ambiently uniform and full of organic instrumental and electronic details. Pip slows down, but above all they let the silence breathe through their sounds. And although they use pure tuning and other advanced techniques and means - they are also preparing a "modular organ" for the Prague concert - the resulting impression is meditative and even comforting. Joyful wandering through timelessness, where disorientation is welcome.
