JANOSKA ENSEMBLE & ULF WAKENIUS - A SALUTE TO OSCAR PETERSON
3. December 2025 19:00 | Stará tržnica, Bratislava
A unique premiere of the Janoska Ensemble and the music of Oscar Peterson for the first time in Slovakia. Experience an extraordinary evening, where virtuosity meets passion and classics meet jazz.
Janoska Ensemble and the music of Oscar Peterson – Bratislava is already waiting for an exceptional musical evening on December 3 as part of the year-long City Sounds festival. During the concert tribute to one of the greatest jazz pianists, "A Salute to Oscar Peterson", the traditional lineup of the ensemble will be joined by the world-famous Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius, a close collaborator of Oscar Peterson himself. During the evening, thanks to the latest technologies, the maestro's original recordings will also be heard. Tickets for the concert in Stara Tržnica are already on sale.
"The Janoska Ensemble concert in December will be really special! I am excited that we will bring the fans an exceptional program in the Slovak premiere - the world-class Janoska Ensemble, the great Ulf Wakenius in conjunction with the original recordings of Oscar Peterson himself," says Matej Šálek, the organizer of the concert.
Ulf Wakenius was Oscar Peterson's official guitarist for ten years, during which he toured with him all over the world and participated in shaping the final period of Peterson's extraordinary musical legacy. His deep musical connection with the master and his authentic understanding of his musical language make this collaboration extraordinary.
The Bösendorfer concert grand piano, operating on the basis of artificial intelligence, will also contribute to the exceptional atmosphere of the evening, which will revive the authentic playing with original recordings by Oscar Peterson himself. This unique instrument will be included in the live program, thanks to which the audience will be able to experience the unmistakable touch and phrasing of the jazz legend - as if Peterson was present on stage again.
In honor of Peterson's genius, his iconic compositions, such as "Cakewalk", "Bach Suite" and "You Look Good to Me", will be performed in the unmistakable Janoska Style, which combines classical virtuosity, improvisation and creative freedom.
Oscar Peterson was one of the greatest pianists in the history of jazz - a virtuoso whose music was full of swing and jazz improvisations, his musical imagination was unparalleled. The Canadian "Maharaja of the Piano", as Duke Ellington called him, combined the brilliant technique of a classical pianist with an unmistakable groove and bluesy sensibility. His playing was an explosion of energy, elegance and spontaneity, but at the same time a deep dive into harmony and rhythm. During his career, he recorded hundreds of albums and collaborated with the greatest personalities of the world of jazz - Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and Charlie Parker. Oscar Peterson was born in 1925 and Janoska Ensemble together with Ulf Wakenius decided to commemorate this musical genius on the occasion of 100 years since his birth.
Three brothers from Bratislava – Ondrej, Roman and František Jánoškov – together with double bassist Julius Darvas form an ensemble that breathes life, spontaneity and virtuosity. Their performances are full of humor, improvisation and energetic interaction with the audience. The musicians are united by a deep-rooted family tradition - the Jánoškov family has been dedicated to music for seven generations, and the Darvas family continues the three-generation heritage of double bass art.
New musical directions appear today under imaginative names, but the Janoska Ensemble crosses all boundaries with its musical language. Their signature Janoska Style – combining classical, jazz and improvisation – has won them fans all over the world. Their debut CD Janoska Style (Deutsche Grammophon, 2016) won a Gold Record just a few months after its release. They were followed by the albums Revolution (2019), The Big B's (2022) and the latest The Four Seasons in Janoska Style (2024), which once again confirms their musical versatility and creativity.
The concert is realized from public funds of the Art Support Fund and with the support of the Bratislava and SOZA Foundation.
