About event

The joint project of the Rekultur platform and the association Krajinou tlilivu is based on the book bestseller of the same name by Polish reporter Witold Szabłowski, who interviewed the personal chefs of the cruelest dictators of the 20th century.

Five evenings presented by several creative teams combine documentary theater, site-specific performance and expert discussion. Through the intimate space of the kitchen, the smell of spices and the clinking of dishes, we get a glimpse into the privacy of individuals who once moved history with full stomachs. Their echoes can still be heard in the current tumult of world events, and together we will try to capture them.

Part Two: Pol Pot

"When I first met Brother Pol Pot, I was speechless. I sat in his bamboo hut in the middle of the jungle and looked at him. My head was racing: so handsome masculine!”

Laughing Yong Moeun, the keeper of the menu of one of history's greatest mass murderers, meets not a monster in the mystical atmosphere of the Cambodian jungle, but the masculine god Pol Pot, who fights for a better tomorrow. French sentences about Marxism, the explosion of American bombs and the terrifying screams of millions of Cambodians tortured penetrate the malarial dream of a perfect society that does not need money or life in modern cities.

"For many years I could watch him laugh every day and listen to him joke. I could cook for him. That's really a lot. You ask if I loved him. After to all that you have heard from me, answer for yourself: how was it possible not to love him?”
