Jack Worthing is madly in love with Gwendoline Fairfax, his friend's cousin, who in turn is enchanted by Jack's hiding place Cecilia. None of the ladies, however, can imagine having someone with a name other than Filip as her husband. So Jack and his friend Algernon impersonate Philip, thus entangling themselves in increasingly absurd situations. Everything they experience inside their apartment is the center of the universe for them. The world behind the fourth wall is far away and too distracting from the chess game they just played.
