Celebrating 100 years of John Coltrane
Jazz visionary, multi-instrumentalist, composer, curator, activist and educator Isaiah Collier is the most prominent personality of the contemporary Chicago jazz scene.
Isaiah Collier will come with the project Collier Plays Coltrane, which commemorates the centenary of John Coltrane's birth. Collier is considered one of the most compelling saxophonists of his generation. His work combines deep respect for the jazz tradition with bold innovation - whether as a leader of his own projects, a member of Angel Bat Dawid & Tha Brothahood, or a collaborator with artists including Chance The Rapper, Wadada Leo Smith or Junius Paul.
In the Collier Plays Coltrane project, Collier returns to John Coltrane's legacy and reinterprets it through a contemporary lens. His ensemble drew considerable attention with the album Cosmic Transitions (2021), which received a five-star rating from DownBeat magazine and numerous awards for album of the year. The recording was made at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary studio on Coltrane's birthday, and was made in part on the same analog technology used to record the iconic A Love Supreme album. The result is a work that pays homage to Coltrane's spiritual and musical vision while taking it in a new direction.
Collier Plays Coltrane brings this legacy vividly into the present – combining spiritual intensity, extensive improvisation and progressive energy in an impressive tribute to one of the most pivotal figures in jazz history.
