About event
Three veterans of the First World War, Gustav, René and Fernand, live together in a retirement home - they meet regularly on the terrace of their current refuge, reminisce about their past and poke each other, not knowing that the biggest battle of their lives is yet to come. One is a cynic with a big heart, suffering from fear of the outside world. The other is passing out every now and then due to a piece of shrapnel stuck in his head, and is therefore unable to carry on a prolonged conversation. The third is a pragmatist and cautious optimist who - despite his limp - tries to keep his feet firmly on the ground. At one point, the trio decide to defy the monotonous "retired" life in which the only perspective is death, and together they plan an expedition to a hill on the horizon, at the top of which the wind blows through the branches of the poplars. Will our heroes succeed in this last adventure of their lives? And will he confirm the rule that one is only as old as one feels?
The respected French playwright and translator Gérald Sibleyras (*1961) is the author of more than 15 full-length plays; The Czech audience will probably know him as the co-author of the successful comedies Half an Hour Late (2006) and Such a Small Joke (2002). For French theaters he also adapted, for example, Hitchcock's 39 Degrees or Keyes' Roses for Algernon. The touching comedy Wind in the Poplar Branches (2003), which we present in Rytířská in the Czech premiere under the title Heroes, which was established in the Anglo-Saxon world by Tom Stoppard, was nominated for the prestigious Molière Award in France in the year of its creation, and three years later won the Laurence Olivier Award in England for the best comedy of the year.
