Miyazaki's geysers of imagery have always built on a core of principled values ​​and stimulating ideas carried by elaborate characters. In one of his latest works, characteristically against the backdrop of an opulent fantasy world of wizards, he develops an understated romance as well as a sensitive treatise on the fact that appearances are not everything.

Miyazaki's adaptation of a fantasy novel for young people by the British writer Diana Wynne Jones takes place in a world full of magic and steampunk technology, but also chaos, ambiguity and contrasts. Modest hatter Sofia is turned into an old man by the curse of a capricious witch. He finds refuge in the bizarre walking castle of the famous wizard Howl, where he meets the fire demon Calcifer and the little boy Markle. While the dashing and handsome Howl regularly goes on nocturnal expeditions, from which he returns torn and exhausted, Sofia admits that something more keeps her in the strange abode than just a curse cast on her. On the one hand, Miyazaki charms the audience with baroquely opulent scenes, while slowly uncovering the individual skins covering the insides of the characters here. To this day, the second most successful Japanese film of all time deals with the appearances and appearances that mask the true essence and the inside of people and things. But first of all, it tells about the power of love, which helps to overcome any obstacles.
