Dietmar Feichtinger

After completing his studies with honors at the Graz University of Technology in 1988, he moved to Paris in 1989. In 1994, he founded Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes, an architectural firm known for its diverse portfolio and a way of working that focuses on both ecological and social responsibility.

The firm achieved international recognition for its groundbreaking architectural designs, particularly in bridge construction. A milestone was the winning of the competition in 1998 for the Simone de Beauvoir pedestrian bridge over the Seine, which is located directly opposite the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. This impressive 304-meter-long bridge with a cantilever span of 190 meters stands out among the 37 bridges in Paris not only for its technical innovation, but also for being the only bridge named after a woman. It was ceremoniously opened on July 13, 2006 by Mayor Bertrand Delanoë.

In 2002, the office was commissioned to design the jetty to Mont Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 1,841 meter long architectural promenade, which was inaugurated in July 2014, fits harmoniously into the landscape and allows Mont Saint-Michel to regain its island characteristics at high tide.

Although Feichtinger does not exclusively describe himself as a “bridge specialist”, he has been responsible for the design and realization of over 20 bridges and footbridges. His most important works include the three-country bridge over the Rhine between France and Germany, the Passerelle de la Paix in Lyon and the Maritime Walkway Aldilonda in Bastia, which was completed in 2020.

In addition to his award-winning architectural work, Feichtinger taught at several European universities and was appointed professor at the Institute for Architecture and Design at the Vienna University of Technology in 2023.

Lecture Series

Creating Perspective_ From Vision to Building

The lecture series in WS 2025 Creating Perspectives: From Idea to Building is part of the Emerging Fields in Architecture module and is dedicated to the central architectural competence of transforming spatial visions into built reality. The invited architects use their projects to show how their ideas - shaped by their attitude, responsibility, creativity and technical implementation skills - became built projects. The series invites you to learn from concrete project experiences and

different perspectives. Questions that interest us include What role do context, existing structures and new technologies play in the design process? How do future-proof architectural perspectives emerge? How are creative ideas developed into implementable solutions and what responsibility do architects have for the built reality of tomorrow?
