We live in strange times in America and the world. The only real support and light in these times is friendship. Friendship between people, friendship between cultures and nations.
Hazmat Modine is a musical group that brings together men and women of all ages and backgrounds. The band is like New York itself, drawing on the diversity of sounds that are woven into the city's history.
The compositions and lyrics are influenced by countless genres and musical languages: they have American roots with offshoots in world music. The genre is fluid and twenty-nine years after its formation, the band is still growing and flourishing. As some retired or moved away from New York, new musicians joined the band with new experiences and musical ideas. Varun Das brings experience in jazz and Indian music; Kenneth Bentley's deep experience playing a wide variety of musical styles and a lifetime of music in the church. Wade, Daisy and Erik continue to write new songs and tunes, with Daisy doing more of the vocals, and as always the Hazmat Horns bring over thirty years of musical cohesion... In all we find unity in the friendship and camaraderie of music. We all need a good friend in life.
Hazmat Modine has been touring and performing for over twenty five years in over forty countries. Their worldwide appearances include: WOMAD (England, Australia, New Zealand, Russia); jazz and folk festivals in Berlin, Vienna, Seville, Montreal, Pori, Cambridge, Vancouver and Calgary; FMM Sines in Portugal and live on BBC3. They have performed in China, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, India, Malaysia, Central Asia and most European countries. They composed for Japanese TV (Tokyo Joe), their music was featured in the Wim Wenders film "Pina" and performed at the 75th anniversary conference of Nobel laureates. Hazmat Modine has appeared on NPR's The Next Big Thing, All Things Considered, WNYC's Soundcheck, German Culture TV 3 SAT, BBC/PRI's The World, and WKCR radio.
