About event
🏙️ PROGRAM
Themed tour in the exhibition “The Mendelssohns in Jägerstrasse” with Eva Ghosh / Karin Maaß
»[…] Only I know that in me and in you and in all people there is an eternal inclination towards everything that is good, true and right, and a conscience that warns and guides us when we move away from it. I know it, I believe it, live in this faith, and it is my religion. [...]. The form in which your religious teacher told you is historical and, like all human principles, changeable. A few thousand years ago the Jewish form was the dominant form, then the pagan form, now it is the Christian form. […]. We raised you, you and your siblings, in Christianity because it is the form of belief of most civilized people and contains nothing that derives you from the good [...]," wrote Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy to his daughter Fanny on her confirmation in March 1820. An enlightened-humanistic mentality becomes clear here, in which people's ethical responsibility and their conscience were the central points of reference.
