About event
Kino Úsmev & Milujem Film Noir also prepared for this cold November an excursion into a gloomy universe full of cynical and harsh guys and seductive but treacherous femmes fatales, where crime is often the only way out. At the third annual Košice noir show, the highest number of American noirs will be shown so far. The theme is escape: whether from prison, from fatal love, conscience or the consequences of a crime.
It is easy to recognize, more difficult to define. Is it a separate genre, a super-genre style or just a historical cycle of films? Critics have not yet found agreement on this, and it is this indeterminacy that adds to the "black" phenomenon's charm. Film noirs are stylish crime films from the 1940s and 1950s with a specific gloomy atmosphere and an unmistakable visual aspect dominated by contrasting lighting and shadowplay.
The show will open on Thursday 6 November with the cult adaptation of the famous provocative novel The Postman Always Rings Twice, 1946) with a theme of the perfect crime and a model, Cainian relationship triangle in which fated lovers plot to murder an inconvenient husband. You will see the electrifying duo Lana Turner - John Garfield in the main roles.
Friday 7 November will be marked by the biggest male actor of film noir. And dead wives! The elegant Humphrey Bogart will present himself to the audience in two different positions: not only as a "traditional" positive hero, but also atypically in the skin of a villain. Charismatic "Bogie" first devises a plan to perfectly murder his wife and then escape from paranoia. In the next title, he will clear his name on the escape from San Quentin prison for a change, and the audience will see the initial situations through his visual perspective.
Konflikt (1945) dresses you in a balloon, puts a hat on you, pushes you into the shadows and immerses you in the fog. The title abounds in atmospheric visuals and relentlessly fast cadence of British announcements. Dark Passage (Dark Passage, 1947) in turn has an innovative work with a subjective camera, an impressive hallucinatory sequence and acting spice in the form of the duo Humphrey Bogart - Lauren Bacall.
The show will close on Saturday 8 November with a heist double program of important titles. The fast-paced B-movie Gun Crazy (1950) redefined the "lovers on the run" theme and later inspired Jean-Luc Godard (Out of Breath, 1960) and Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde, 1967). For a change, The Asphalt Jungle (1950) laid the foundations of the heist subgenre, introduced a well-established scheme (recruitment - planning - execution - escape) and introduced the noir city as a character.
