Faust / Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau / German Empire, 1926 / 116 min. – None of the many dozens of pictures that were inspired by the Faustian legend, surprisingly none of those that already had the spoken word at their disposal, managed to translate into film the basic conflict of the eternal struggle between good and evil, light and darkness, in such a congenial form as it is characterized by Murnau's Faust. Leading contemporary German director Helma Sanders-Brahms wrote on the occasion of the film's re-release at the Berlin Film Festival in 2003:

“In Murnau's Faust, the 'seventh art' has achieved simplicity and clarity, but also dignity and depth, which enclose the sacred and mystical in their innermost core with the grandeur of Bach's oratorios. Of the filmmakers I know, only Tarkovsky achieved a similar effect with similar means, only he recognized and subscribed to this spiritual dimension in film. Today, it is hard to find places in art where people wounded by blindness, like myself, can spread their wings so widely. This certainly includes the music of Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and the paintings of Grünewald and Dürer, in whose divisiveness and brilliance humanity appears in incomparable strength and emphasis.”
