In the second half of the 19th century, when the city of Vienna expanded rapidly beyond the suburbs after the city walls were demolished and the population grew to two million within a few years, the Space for the naturally increasing number of deaths in the old cemeteries of the 18th century is scarce. In 1863, the Vienna City Council decided to build the Central Cemetery, which then as now is one of the largest cemeteries in the world, the “City of the Dead” of Vienna 😳

Your walk leads through the history and present of the cemetery, to old and new honorary graves, to magnificent crypts and quiet graves overgrown with ivy that no one visits anymore. And maybe you'll even see deer between the gravestones on our foray 🦌
