About event
The “Gin Church” – an unusual name for a Berlin church!
The reason for this are thousands of empty gin bottles, which were donated by the Gilka spirits company after the Second World War to replace the windows of the Twelve Apostles Church, which were destroyed in 1943. The special light from the bottles walled up in the gallery windows of the side aisles can still be experienced today.
You can find other remarkable windows in this place. When you enter the church, you are immediately captivated by the colorful, expressive stained glass windows in the choir and the lower aisles. The artist Alfred Kothe created them in collaboration with the art glazier Detlev Graw between 1960 and 1992. The iconography of these windows as well as details from the life of Alfred Kothe, who erected a monument to his favorite cat here, are the subject of the tour. The history, the remarkable organ and the bells of this church in the north of Schöneberg are also discussed.
