About event

The Austrian Cultural Forum and Ambit Gallery present the work of the Austrian painter Josef Karl Rädler (1844–1917). This porcelain painter and a native of Sokolov was placed in psychiatric care in 1893 at the instigation of his family. During his stay at the then Mauer-Öhling State Medical and Nursing Institution, where he lived until his death, he created hundreds of watercolors that impressively document everyday life in the institution.

The presentation of Josef Karl Rädler's works is part of the Lower Austrian State Exhibition 2026 When the World is Upside Down. Human. Psyche. Health. The national exhibition deals with the question of how society has approached mental illness over the centuries. It can be seen until November 8, 2026 at the Mauer Regional Clinic near Amstetten.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Wednesday, July 15 at 6:00 p.m. in the gallery of the Austrian Cultural Forum in the presence of representatives of the Department of Art and Culture of the state of Lower Austria. Interpretation provided.
