At the start of the year, two masterpieces by Franz Schubert will be heard, which combine joie de vivre, melancholy and heartfelt poetry like no other.

After Beethoven's Opus 97, the genre of the piano trio sank into a kind of lethargy for almost a decade - until Franz Schubert published his E flat major trio in print for the first time in the year of his death in 1828. Written in November 1827, i.e. at the time of Winterreise, this explains the melodic style, the abrupt harmonic abysses and the existential tension that permeates almost every bar. “Like an angry celestial apparition,” Robert Schumann remembered a decade later, this work passed over the “hustle and bustle of music” of the time. For him, it remained Schubert's "most peculiar" work throughout his life - a nonplus ultra of romantic chamber music.

In the second part, the famous Trout Quintet for violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano can be heard. It was created “at the special request” of the k. and k. civil servant and amateur cellist Sylvester Paumgartner, whom Schubert had met in 1819 in Steyr, Upper Austria. Paumgartner had expressly asked the composer to integrate variations on the song Die Forelle (1816/17) into the work, as he was “completely delighted by the delicious little song”. The cheerful basic tone of the song characterizes the atmosphere of the entire quintet: a carefree joy in making music, carried by its light, bright sound. Schubert has masterfully fulfilled Paumgartner's mission with a work that bridges the gap between folk music, salon and romanticism.

A festive start to the concert year and a musical New Year's gift that you shouldn't miss!
