About event

When we invited the then 70-year-old composer Carl Stone to the Czech premiere last time, we could have imagined his concert in any way, but few would have guessed that the theatrical setting of Alfredo v dvor would end up seeming out of place academically and binding the audience to unrestrained dancing, so we will try it this time exactly the opposite in Holešovice Cross. Still, a few individuals backed out of the pews to squat, and those who couldn't move their whole bodies at least had a smile from ear to ear the whole time. Without exaggeration, it was one of the most joyful concerts we have ever done. So it was impossible to refuse the offer this year, also because of the author's place of residence and age.

Carl Stone was a pioneer of laptop music long before anyone used such a term, and his first computer compositions date back to the days when the very concept of a laptop defined at all (and those machines were far from resembling current laptops). Before Stone started focusing purely on the digital environment, he had a jazz-rock band with Stefan Weiss (who later became famous under the ritually industrial alias Z'EV) or composed mainly drone pieces with a Buchla synthesizer and collages using turntables and tapes, already while studying composition at CalArts under Morton Subotnick and James Tenney.

Even in digital sound, he dedicated himself to the perfectionistic extraction of many times very simple samples and was twenty years ahead of the time when subgenres such as glitch or plunderfonia spread, the founder of which is without exaggeration. But it has very little in common with the unified sound of laptop users at the turn of the millennium, even though it still uses the Max/MSP programming language today. Stone's handwriting can be divided into two groups: on the one hand, meditative slow compositions built often on only one or two samples, in which there is a constant shift and barely noticeable changes, or then ultra colorful and fun collages that sound like the contents of a virtual trash can on the desktop, in which all the mp3s went through a digital shredder, after which Stone very ingeniously reassembles their mixed remains into songs.

Carl Stone has been commuting between the West Coast of the USA and Japan for many years, where he teaches at the university, and of course he established a collaboration with a lot of local musicians, let's name Otomo Yoshihide for all of them, with whom he is also connected by a very related work with gramophones. He is a composer whose significance can bear comparison with names like Steve Reich or Charlemagne Palestine on the one hand, while at the same time he is the forefather of the sound we associate with SND, Oval or the Mille Plateaux label. In Cross, however, we expect great fun with an unbridled firework of samples, which in some ways remind us of contemporary hyperpop.
