"Everything is conversion" wrote Hermann Czech back in 1973. Today that counts Transformation of the existing stock to the biggest themes in European architecture - the architect Adam Gajdoš shows us some excellent examples that have currently received international resonance through the Mies van der Rohe Awards, among others.
From the revival of the formerly ruinous Námestie slobody (Freedom Square, 2021 Architektur, LABAK) to the conversion of industrial buildings into new urban spaces (former cogeneration plant, DF Creative Group, Pamarch, Perspective) to the subtle transformation of Café Ferdinand (studeny architekti, Peter Stec Studio, GRAU). The conclusion is the Slovak National Gallery (SNG), a baroque barracks with a late modern extension by Vladimír Dedeček. Comprehensively renovated and newly expanded by BKPŠ Kusý - Paňák, it has become one of the most successful architectures in Slovakia in recent years.
