This historical figure, slightly alienated, plays a fatal role in Thomas Bernhards of the subordinate . Because when encountering Gould, the anonymous narrator and his student friend Wertheimer realize that they cannot achieve the highest in art. Typical Bernhard's ruthlessness manifests this billing with the virtuosity based on three archetypes the inevitability of artistic existence. Inserted by the inaccessible ingenuity of her companion, Wertheimer and the anonymous narrator finally give up the piano game, while Glenn Gould, Bach's Goldberg variations repeatedly to the "art machine". The scandal author's virtuoso finger exercise is compared in the second half of a performance of the famous Bach Goldberg variations.
