The year 2025 marks important anniversaries in the history of classical music: the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss II, the 200th birthday of Bedřich Smetana (2024), the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri Shostakovich and the 30th anniversary of the Korean composer's death Isang Yun.

The ARKO Ensemble is dedicating a special concert series to these great composers - the Anniversary Concert Series of Great Composers, in which past and present, Europe and Korea merge in a unique musical encounter.

A special highlight is that the concert takes place in the historic Johann Strauss Concert Hall from 1837 - the last original venue for all four Strauss geniuses.

Here, where Johann Strauss himself once played music, you can experience the splendor of the Viennese musical tradition anew.

Admission is free - the concert also offers the opportunity to discover the fascinating world of the Strauss dynasty in the museum before the music in this historic place sounds.

Program:

Johann Strauss Sohn (1825-1899) – Ischl Waltz

Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884) – Piano Trio in G minor, op. 15 (approx. 30 Min.)

—Break—

Isang Yun (1917–1995) – Piri for clarinet solo

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) – Piano Quintet in G minor, op. 57

About ARKO Ensemble:

A project of theArts Council Korea (ARKO), which provides international performance opportunities to outstanding South Korean musicians under the age of 34 who are studying or working abroad.

About the venue:

The House of Strauss in the former Casino Zögernitz is now a carefully restored building with its own Strauss Museum. Social festivals and concerts took place here as early as the 19th century.

In the summer of 1850, Johann Strauss II organized a large folk festival with a ball, illumination and fireworks “for his benefit”. For this occasion he composed the waltz Johannis-Käferln (op. 82) and performed it here for the first time - a work whose fine melodies musically trace the glow of the summer fireflies.

The museum invites you to experience how the Strauss dynasty became a symbol of Viennese music with their waltzes and performances in the largest halls in the world. Interactive stations and exhibits bring their history to life.
