About event
One of the basic tools of propaganda is creating an image of the enemy.
The lecture is dedicated to looking at the current manifestations of disinformation, hateful rhetoric and conspiracy narratives that shape public discourse, and to look for their historical parallels in the period of the Slovak State (1939 – 1945) and the continuation of the political decisions of the communist regime.
It was during the period of the Slovak State that hoaxes and state propaganda played a key role in shaping public opinion against the Jewish population and in legitimizing their exclusion, persecution and property theft - the so-called Arization.
Let us take a closer look at the course of the Arization of the Jewish population in Slovakia and its impact on Bratislava itself.
We will focus on how conspiratorial ideas about Jews as enemies of the state, economic pests or "traitors of the nation" were systematically spread in the media and political communication during the wartime regime.
We will show the mechanisms that made it possible for hatred against one population group to become socially acceptable and how the state actively supported its stigmatization for the sake of political and economic goals.
At the same time, we will look at how similar narratives and mechanisms work today: who spreads them, what are their goals, why do they find a response in society, and what are their possible consequences for minorities, democracy and social cohesion.
We will make it possible to better understand the connections between the past and the present and perceive the risks that result from the normalization of hatred in society.
Prešporské Mondays - a cycle of ten thematic lectures focuses not only on major historical events and well-known personalities, but also on less visible stories of streets, squares, crafts, church orders or minorities that shaped the face Presporka. Lectures are given in an understandable and engaging form, supplemented with contemporary interesting facts, contexts and stories.
Prešporské Mondays are intended for all those interested in the history of the city - for laymen and enthusiasts who want to get to know Bratislava more deeply, in a wider context and with an emphasis on its unique character.
You will be guided through the topics by Peter Fiala, lecturer, guide of Bratislava Wanderings and the cycle Date with the City BKIS, member of the Association of Bratislava Guides.
