About event
“Suddenly a pianist appeared on the stage, who retreated behind the music, who acted in such a way that one could recognize the delicacy of the musical text... He showed an immense musicality that was convincing in every nuance."
Carsten Dürer, Piano News
Anton Gerzenberg, born in Hamburg in 1996, is one of the outstanding figures of the younger piano generation. After winning first prize at the Concours Géza Anda in Zurich in 2021 and introducing himself as a “Great Talent” at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 2022-24, he has established himself with an impressively diverse repertoire. With his virtuoso, subtle playing he inspires audiences and the specialist press alike. In June 2024 he was awarded the Martha Argerich Steinway Prize.
Anton Gerzenberg opened the 2025/26 season with a duo concert with Martha Argerich at the Hitzacker Summer Music Days ("A Concert from Another Star", NDR Kultur), as well as several programs at the renowned Accademia Chigiana in Siena. Next comes a solo recital at the Vienna Konzerthaus with works from Debussy to Stravinsky and Szymanowski to Boulez. Remaining particularly associated with the house since its time as a “Great Talent”, one focus this season is on literary-musical programs, including those on Thomas Mann. Another highlight is his debut with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. In the 2024/25 season, Anton Gerzenberg was among others. at the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Musikverein Wien, the Graz Musikverein, the Nikolaisaal Potsdam as well as at the Ruhr Piano Festival and at Le Piano Symphonique Lucerne. In spring 2025 he toured Asia together with Lilya Zilberstein, with concerts in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and China.
Anton Gerzenberg has already given concerts in important halls such as the Tonhalle Zurich, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Franz Liszt Academy Budapest and the National Concert Hall of Taiwan as well as at festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Heidelberg Spring and the Martha Argerich Festivals in Lugano and Hamburg. He played music, among other things: with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Orchester de chambre de Paris, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Musikkollegium Winterthur, the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra. His musical partners include Martha Argerich, Ilya Gringolts, Julia Hagen and Dora Schwarzberg as well as conductors such as Paavo Järvi, Stefan Blunier, Jonathan Stockhammer, Holly Hyun Choe and Nil Venditti.
His strong commitment to new music was greatly influenced by his studies with Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Anton Gerzenberg caused a stir, particularly with the tour of György Ligeti's complete etude cycle, to which he accompanied works by Debussy and Ravel. In 2019 he founded the ÉRMA Ensemble, which specializes in contemporary music, with like-minded people. He had previously studied with Julia Suslin and Julija Botchkovskaia in Hamburg and with Jan Jiracek von Armin in Vienna. He received further important impulses from artistic personalities such as Robert Levin, Alfred Brendel and Bella Davidovich.
Anton Gerzenberg's musical DNA combines a unique family tradition: his mother is the internationally celebrated pianist Lilya Zilberstein, his father is a trumpeter, his brother is a pianist and lyricist. Today, it is not least the naturalness with which Anton Gerzenberg moves in a wide variety of solo programs and chamber music ensembles that impresses. His repertoire ranges from the early music of Sweelinck to advanced contemporary works, such as Lachenmann and Boulez. His interpretations impress with their tonal sophistication, intellectual depth and creative risk-taking.
