"Nothing Concrete": That was the name of the Cologne band's first album in 2016 AnnenMayKantereit. There couldn't have been a better title. Because there was actually no career plan back then, the motto was more like: do it first, follow the vibe, see what happens. That's how Christopher Annen (guitar), Henning May (vocals) and Severin Kantereit (drums) had already done it when they met at school and performed together as street musicians, and it stayed that way when they published early songs on YouTube, produced their first album themselves, which is now long out of print, and finally released their debut EP in 2015 under the equally telling title "Will somehow go". And how it happened: What has happened since then is completely extraordinary and – after all – one of the most impressive careers in German pop of the past few decades. Since the band was founded in 2011, AnnenMayKantereit have continuously developed from a Cologne insider tip into one of the most successful bands in the republic without ever losing their grip on the ground. With their five albums to date, AnnenMayKantereit have achieved gold and platinum status and played at the biggest festivals; Her videos for songs like "Barefoot at the Piano", "3 Days by the Sea" and "Often Asked" have been viewed over 1.4 billion times on YouTube. They have 1.9 million TikTok followers and over 1.4 million on Instagram, and five million people listen to them on Spotify every month. AnnenMayKantereit has also gained large international fan bases in countries such as Mexico, Ukraine and Turkey. Their version of Suzanne Vega's classic "Tom's Diner", recorded together with Giant Rooks, was certified gold in the USA, the band has played a total of over 400 shows, received numerous awards and fulfilled a dream with a sold-out concert in Cologne's RheinEnergieSTADION in September 2023. One could continue this list and yet one would never use a word like superstars in connection with AnnenMayKantereit, even though they have basically been that for a long time. In 2026, AnnenMayKantereit will finally return with a new tour: From July, the band will play concerts again in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland, in addition to another show in the Cologne Stadium.
