Klangfield invites you to the third a concert in the Auditoryreset series, which will be dedicated to the composition Memory Space by the American experimental composer Alvin Lucier, and in the second part of which the christening of the Roland CD recorded in Punctu will take place Dahinden: Theater of the Mind, recently released on Moving Furniture Records. This is followed by Theater of the Mind.

Alvin Lucier is a seminal composer of the American post-war avant-garde, and (Hartford) Memory Space (1970) is among his best-known compositions from the late 1960s and early 1970s (along with I Am Sitting In A Room from 1969). It is a text score with instructions for the musicians to go out of the concert hall and use any means (in their memory, on paper, or a recorder) to record a given period of time, which, after returning to the hall, they try to reconstruct for the audience as objectively as possible using the sounds of their instruments, without excessive interpretation or improvisation. In accordance with the instructions, the version performed at Žižkov in Prague will therefore be called (Žižkov) Memory Space.

Roland Dahinden is a Swiss trombonist, composer and conductor, known to Prague audiences primarily as the conductor of the PMP Orchestra. He studied with Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, USA, and as a performer he collaborated with important figures of jazz, contemporary and experimental music, e.g. John Cage, Peter Ablinger, Pauline Oliveros, Anthony Braxton, or Christian Wolff.

The composition Theater of the Mind for bass clarinet and electronics was commissioned by the Stichting Mousai Foundation, which focuses on raising awareness of Parkinson's disease and mental health in general. It is based on the composer's interviews with patients undergoing deep brain stimulation, which has effects similar to dopamine, so that it often promotes the need for activity and creative expression even in people who have not shown tendencies towards it. The unprecedented mental activity contrasts strongly with the gradual loss of control over the body, and can lead to the feeling that the mind is trapped in a dying body. The composition was performed for the first time at the Ostrava Days of New Music festival in 2021.

The composition (Žižkov) Memory Space will be performed by Gareth Davis, Luan Gonçalves, Ian Mikyska, Elia Moretti, Jakub Švejnar, Mikuláš Mrva, Theater of the Mind will be performed by Gareth Davis and Mikuláš Mrva.

The concert is realized with the support of the Swiss Arts Council ProHelvetia, Stichting Mousai and the State Fund Cultures.

Klangfield invites you to the third concert in the Auditoryreset series which will be dedicated to the composition Memory Space by American experimental composer Alvin Lucier. The second part of the evening will feature the launch of a CD recorded at Punctum: Roland Dahinden: Theater of the Mind, recently released on Moving Furniture Records, and a performance of a shorter version of the piece.

Composer and sound artist Alvin Lucier is a key figure in the American post-war avant-garde music. (Hartford) Memory Space (1970) is among his best-known works from the 1960s and 1970s, alongside I Am Sitting In A Room (1969). It is a text score instructing performers to leave the concert hall and document a specific time span – using their memory, paper, or an audio recorder – and then, upon returning, reconstruct the experience using their instruments and voices, avoiding excessive interpretation or improvisation . In accordance with these instructions, the version performed in Prague's Žižkov district will be called (Žižkov) Memory Space.

Roland Dahinden is a Swiss trombone player, composer, and conductor, known to Prague audiences primarily as the conductor of the PMP Orchestra. He studied with Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, USA, and has collaborated with important figures in jazz, contemporary, and experimental music, such as John Cage, Peter Ablinger, Pauline Oliveros, Anthony Braxton, and Christian Wolff as a performer.

His piece for bass clarinet and electronics, Theater of the Mind, was commissioned by Stichting Mousai, an organization focused on raising awareness about Parkinson's disease and mental health more broadly. The composition draws on the composer's conversations with patients undergoing deep brain stimulation, a treatment with effects similar to dopamine. This stimulation often fosters a need for activity and creative expression, even in individuals who previously showed no inclination towards such pursuits. The intense mental activity starkly contrasts with the gradual loss of control over one's muscles, leading to the sense of a mind trapped in a decaying body. The piece was premiered at the Ostrava Days of New Music festival in 2021.

Memory Space will be performed by Gareth Davis, Luan Gonçalves, Ian Mikyska, Elia Moretti, Jakub Švejnar, and Mikuláš Mrva, Theater of the Mind by Gareth Davis and Mikuláš Mrva.

Realized wiith the support of the Swiss Arts Council ProHelvetia, Stichting Mousai, Státní Fond Kultury.
