About event

On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, we will welcome a specialist in determining the age of archaeological finds using the radiocarbon method and dendrochronology, Mgr. Peter Bartu, PhD. (Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra), who collaborates with many scientists in Slovakia and abroad and helps to determine the most accurate age of archaeological finds, parts of buildings and movable objects of cultural heritage.

The lecture will be a mosaic of stories about the research of our findings by radiocarbon and dendrochronological dating. After an introduction to the functioning of both of these chronometric methods, we will devote ourselves to the research of several exceptional findings. We will start with the story of research into the age of millet, which brought about a revolutionary change in agriculture, and its oldest find comes from Záhori. Then we will look at the possibilities and pitfalls of researching the age of the first Slovak prehistoric fields, which are in Liptov. There we will take a moment to look around the landscape with the question of how far into the past human intervention can be proven in the Liptovská basin. Next, we will move under the High Tatras and summarize the results and dating possibilities of the princely tomb from Poprad – Matejoviec. We cannot avoid sad stories either. By researching human remains from several locations, we will show how chronometric dating contributes to uncovering forgotten and unforgotten human tragedies. Towards the end of the lecture, we will touch on our so far only complete archaeological finds of wooden boats, which are separated by more than 1600 years. And if we still have time and desire, they will take us to two interesting art- and building-historical finds from the High Middle Ages, the age of which we are currently investigating. in the Slovak National Museum - Archaeological Museum in Bratislava, also with tasty Bratislava rolls (thanks to our nice sponsors from the civic association Numizmatika Slovensko) and fragrant coffee or tea :-)

Admission €3, payment by card is possible.
