Session with presentation. “Imagine how Rossellini was led to treat his main character this way. This psychological objectivity was in the logic of his style. Rossellini's “realism” has nothing in common with everything that cinema (except for Renoir) has hitherto given us by realistic. This is not a thematic but style realism. It is perhaps the only director in the world who knows how to interest us in an action, leaving it objectively in the same plane of staging of its context. Our emotion is pure of any sentimentality, having been led to reflect on our intelligence. It is not the actor who moves us, nor the event, but the meaning we are forced to take from it. In this staging, the moral or dramatic sense is never obvious to the surface of reality, yet we cannot avoid knowing what we are aware. It will not be a solid definition of realism in art forcing the spirit to take sides without deceiving beings and things? Man
